The
Astros look to dominate the NL Central this season. After 2 trades that have
really improved the nucleus of the team, they feel hard pressed that another
team will compete. Hopefully, if they play well enough, they could have a shot
of going deep in the playoffs.
Catcher-This may be the Astros weakest offensive positon. Brad Ausmus will
likely start, his contact ratings are very respectable, and his Arm and Glove
are excellent. If Ausmus dosn't work out look for Zaun to get some time behind
the plate. The platoon will bat Eighth.e
First Baseman-Jeff Bagwell has been a mainstay at this position for years and
don't look for this to change. He will bring his consistent power numbers to the
team again and look for him to bat Fifth in a solid lineup.
Second Baseman-This will be a strong position for the 'Stros as Jeff Kent will
man it as one of the best in the game. His numbers should be solid for power and
for average. Recently acquired Mark Grudzelanek will have no issue giving Kent
an occasional day off.
Shortstop- Although not one of the best in the league, Jose Vizcaino is a very
respectable Shortstop. With his contact ratings, he can definitley hit close to
.300 which is all the 'Stros really need of him.
Thirdbaseman- Morgan Ensberg will get the nod at the hot corner, as an exciting
youthful player. He can do well with his ratings, and if he has any difficulties
look for Geoff Blum to get some playing time.
LeftField-Recently acquired Moises Alou will get the start out in Left. He was
brought in to solidify the Outfield, and he does just that. If he gets his bat
going he will be a good threat late in the Astros order.
Centerfield-Craig Biggio comes back as the leadoff hitter, and he is looking to
have 1 more big year. Ready to stick it to the all critics who think he should
still play 2b, Biggio still is the teams leadoff hitter, and he can get a high .OBP
then his job will be done.
Rightfield-Lance Berkman is perhaps the teams best hitter. He will put a scare
into the hearts of many pitchers throughout the season. Look for him to have a
breakout year as he is only getting better.
Starting Pitching-The 'Stros have a very solid 1,2,3 punch in Oswalt,Leiter, and
Miller. Oswalt is the youthful ace everyone expects him to be. Newly acquired Al
Leiter looks to add some veteran leadership to a relatively young staff, as well
as pick up 15-18 wins. Wade Miller will try to impress this season and with his
arsenal, that is likely. The outcome of the season may rely on how well the 4
and 5 starters can hold up. Tim Redding and Jared Fernandez will start the
season there. Redding is a solid youngster with a lot of potential, the 'Stros
should hope that he doesn't have too many growing pains. Fernandez a master
trickster with his knuckleball will try to fool batters throughout the year. If
neither can get it done then look for Borowski or Lidge to get some
starts.
Relief Pitching:This may be one of the NL's best pens. Newly acquired Borowski
will be the long reliever. Also acquired in that deal was Alfonseca who will
solidify the middle relief with either Lidge or Moehler. The 1 2 punch for setup
to relief will be amazing, with Octavio Dotel and Fireman closer Billy Wagner.
Look for Villone to possibly get some setup work as well.
